Short answer: if you mainly sell products and want the least hassle, Shopify is usually the safest pick (from S$29 a month billed yearly on the Basic plan). If you already run a WordPress site, or content matters as much as the shop, WooCommerce gives you more control but needs someone to look after it. Wix suits small, simple shops and service businesses that want to do it themselves.

What each one really costs

Shopify. The plan fee is the easy part. Shopify's Singapore pricing page lists Basic at S$29 a month billed yearly (S$39 monthly), Grow at S$99 (S$132 monthly) and Advanced at S$399 (S$531 monthly). On top of that you pay card fees, plus paid apps if you need extra features. One fee to watch: if you take payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a third-party transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. That matters for PayNow, which we cover below.

WooCommerce. The plugin is free, with no revenue share. WooCommerce's own pricing page says most stores spend about $25 to $350 a month on hosting and $29 to $299 a year for each paid extension. You also need someone to keep WordPress, the theme and plugins updated. That's either your time or a care plan.

Wix. You pay one plan fee that covers hosting. The plans that let you accept payments are Core, Business and Business Elite. Wix says prices and currency vary by location, and the page we opened only showed US dollars, so check the SGD price on Wix's plans page before you budget.

Taking PayNow, GrabPay and cards in Singapore

Singapore shoppers expect PayNow. Here's where each platform stands as of today.

  1. Shopify. Shopify Payments works in Singapore and takes credit and debit cards and express checkouts. Shopify says GrabPay is in early access for eligible Singapore stores, but PayNow isn't offered. To take PayNow, shops add a third-party provider such as HitPay or Airwallex, which triggers Shopify's third-party transaction fee on top of the provider's own fee. Check the payment settings in your admin before you decide.
  2. WooCommerce. WooPayments is available in Singapore and takes cards and GrabPay, but PayNow isn't on its Singapore list. To add PayNow, install a Stripe or HitPay plugin.
  3. Wix. HitPay's Wix page says Wix doesn't support PayNow natively, and you can add it through their integration.

If you go through Stripe (for example with a WooCommerce plugin), its Singapore pricing page lists domestic cards at 3.4% + 50 cents, PayNow at 1.3% and GrabPay at 3.3%. Stripe's PayNow guide says it's for Singapore accounts, in SGD, with a minimum of S$0.50 per payment. PayNow also has no chargebacks, which is nice for small shops.

Our tip: add up your expected card share and PayNow share, then do the maths for each option. A few percent on every order adds up fast.

Who each platform suits

Pick Shopify if you sell physical products, want to launch quickly, and don't want to worry about hosting, security or plugin updates. It's also strong if you plan to sell on social media or in a physical shop later.

Pick WooCommerce if you already have a WordPress site you like, you publish lots of articles or guides, or you need something unusual (custom pricing rules, bookings plus products, B2B ordering). Budget for proper hosting and regular updates. A neglected WordPress shop gets slow and risky.

Pick Wix if you're a service business with a few products, you want to edit everything yourself with drag and drop, and you don't expect a large catalogue.

How we'd help you decide

When you ask us which platform to use, we go through the same five questions:

  1. How many products, and how many variants? A handful of items is fine anywhere. Hundreds of products with sizes and colours points to Shopify or WooCommerce.
  2. Who will run it day to day? If it's the owner with no tech help, we lean Shopify or Wix.
  3. Is content a big part of how you get customers? If you rely on blog posts and SEO pages, WordPress with WooCommerce is hard to beat.
  4. Which payments do your customers want? If PayNow is most of your sales, we price out the gateway fees on each platform before choosing.
  5. What do you already have? Moving platforms costs time and can hurt your Google rankings if done badly. Sometimes the best choice is to fix what you have.

Quick answers

Is Shopify cheaper than WooCommerce in Singapore? Not always. Shopify starts at S$29 a month billed yearly. WooCommerce is free but you pay for hosting, extensions and upkeep, so the total depends on how much help you need.

Can I accept PayNow on Shopify? Yes, through a third-party provider such as HitPay, because Shopify Payments doesn't offer PayNow in Singapore. Shopify then charges a third-party transaction fee (2% on Basic), so compare the total cost.

Which platform is easiest for a beginner? Wix and Shopify are the easiest to run without a developer. WooCommerce gives you more control but needs more looking after.

Can I switch platforms later? Yes, but plan it. You need to move products, customers and set up redirects so you keep your Google rankings.
