How long does SEO take? An honest timeline

How long SEO really takes, month by month: what happens in months 1, 3, 6 and 12, what speeds it up or slows it down, and what Google itself says.

Short answer: for most small businesses, the first small signs usually show up in the first few months, with steadier results somewhere around six to twelve months, and longer in competitive industries. That's a typical range, not a promise. Google itself says some changes take effect in a few hours or days, while others can take several months. Anyone who promises page one by a date is guessing.

What Google says about timing

Google doesn't publish an SEO timeline, but its own pages give useful hints:

  1. Changes vary a lot. Google's SEO Starter Guide says some changes might take effect in a few hours and others could take several months. It suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped.
  2. New sites take a while to be noticed. Google says it can take a few weeks for it to notice a new site.
  3. Quality takes months to be recognised. Google's core updates page says it could take several months for its systems to learn and confirm that a site is consistently producing helpful content. If you see no change after a few months, you might be waiting for the next core update. Google says these happen several times a year.
  4. Nobody can guarantee a #1 ranking. Google says this plainly in its guide to hiring an SEO, and suggests asking what results to expect and in what timeframe.

Month 1: fixing the foundation

The first month is mostly behind the scenes. Don't expect traffic changes yet.

  1. Set up or check Google Search Console and Google Analytics.
  2. Fix technical problems: noindex tags, broken pages, slow loading, missing sitemap.
  3. Research keywords: what your customers actually type, and which searches you can realistically win.
  4. Set up or clean up your Google Business Profile if you serve local customers.

What you might see: more pages indexed, errors in Search Console going down. That's progress, even if sales haven't moved.

Month 3: early signs

By now your main pages should be improved and some new content published.

  1. Service pages rewritten to answer real customer questions.
  2. A few new articles or FAQ pages published.
  3. Early local SEO work: reviews coming in, profile kept up to date.

What you might see: your site showing for more searches in Search Console (impressions going up), some long, specific keywords moving onto page one or two. Clicks may still be small.

Month 6: things start to add up

This is often when small businesses in less competitive areas start to see steadier results, if the work has been consistent.

  1. Content keeps going out on a regular schedule.
  2. Pages that are close to page one get improved.
  3. Other sites start linking to you: suppliers, partners, directories, local news.

What you might see: more enquiries from organic search, more keywords on page one, especially specific ones like "[service] + [area]".

Month 12: compounding

By a year in, good SEO starts to feel like an asset. Pages that rank keep bringing visitors without you paying per click.

  1. You're competing for bigger, broader keywords.
  2. You refresh older pages so they stay accurate.
  3. You've learned which topics bring paying customers, and you write more of those.

What you might see: organic search becoming a reliable source of enquiries. In very competitive fields (law, finance, renovation, aesthetics), month 12 may still be the middle of the journey.

What speeds SEO up

  1. A technically healthy site. Fast, mobile-friendly, nothing blocking Google.
  2. Low competition. A niche service in a specific area moves faster than "lawyer Singapore".
  3. Some history. A site that already has a few genuine links and some useful pages usually moves faster than a brand-new one. It's the links and content that help. Google has said the age of the domain on its own doesn't matter.
  4. Consistent, helpful content. Google says its systems aim to reward helpful, people-first content. Steady publishing beats a burst then silence.
  5. Your input. You know your customers' questions better than anyone. Owners who share real details, photos and answers get better pages.

What slows it down

  1. A brand-new domain with no links yet.
  2. Fixing the past. Spammy old links, copied content or a manual action in Search Console all need cleaning up first.
  3. Changing the website midway. A redesign or platform move without proper redirects can undo a lot of progress.
  4. Thin or copied pages. Google's Page indexing report notes it may crawl a page and still choose not to index it.
  5. Stopping and starting. SEO paused for three months often means rebuilding momentum.

How to tell if it's working before the sales come in

Don't judge SEO only by rankings for one keyword. Every month, look at:

  1. Impressions in Search Console: is Google showing you for more searches?
  2. Clicks: are more people coming from Google?
  3. Number of keywords on page one or two.
  4. Enquiries from organic search: calls, forms, WhatsApp.

If impressions and keywords are growing, you're usually heading the right way, even before enquiries pick up.

Quick answers

How long does SEO take to work? Typically a few months for early signs and around six to twelve months for steadier results, longer in competitive industries. Google says some changes can take several months to show.

Can SEO work in one month? Technical fixes can help quickly, especially if something was blocking Google. Lasting results usually take longer.

Why has my SEO not worked after three months? Three months is often still early. Check Search Console for growing impressions, and make sure nothing technical is blocking your pages.

Is it better to run Google Ads while waiting for SEO? Often, yes. Ads bring visitors from day one while SEO builds up, and the ad data shows which keywords bring customers.
